YouTube is a popular video sharing website. It was founded in February 2005 and the key players in its creation were Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. It was bought by Google Inc for $1.65 billion, and is now operated as a subsidiary of Google. Their famous slogan is “Broadcast Yourself”. The website is available in 14 to 22 languages. Uploading videos which contain defamation, pornography, copyright violations, and material encouraging criminal conduct is illegal by YouTube's terms of service.

YouTube is using Adobe Flash video technology to display a video. YouTube has a wide variety of user generated video content and few companies who have part in partnership program have uploaded video content for example media corporations including CBS, the BBC, and UMG. Users are divided into two categories, first type of users are registered users who have made their accounts on YouTube and they can watch any video, comment on any video, rate any video and can also upload unlimited video. Registered users account is called channel. Other type of users can only see the videos and for accessing other features like rating, uploading videos they need to sign up.

YouTube is growing rapidly since its launch and now after a few years more than six million videos are viewed daily and minimum 70,000 videos are loaded everyday and the first video loaded on YouTube was “me at the zoo” by one of the founder Jawed Karim at San Diego Zoo. It is estimated that YouTube consume as much bandwidth as much the entire internet consumes and according to few surveys it is the third most visited website after yahoo and Google.

YouTube has attained an excellent position in a very small time period. Hulu is one of the competitors and to give it Hulu more tough time YouTube signed a contract with MGM, Loins Gate Entertainment and CBS which allows the companies to upload the full-length films and television shows accompanied advertisements. Hulu features content from NBC, FOX and Disney.

YouTube has a big social impact and it has made it easy to share videos and anyone can view any video within 2 mins of its upload. YouTube has experienced a lot of criticism because copy righted material that is uploaded, inappropriate content available, privacy issues and promoting racism. Many countries blocked it because of the above reason.

Videos can be ranked as rising videos, Most Discussed, Most Viewed, Top Favorite, Most Popular, Most responded and Top rated. The most popular ranking is most viewed.
