Twitter was founded in 2006 and is a social networking and micro blogging website. Twitter earned heights of fame pretty fast and is known worldwide. Twitter funders include venture capital, Union, Digital Garage, Spark Capital, Expeditions, Institutional Venture Partners and Benchmark Capital and the Industry Standard. It is also called the SMS of the internet. Its user friendly interface and amazing features made its position in user’s hearts. Users can send each other text based posts of up to 140 characters and are called tweets. Tweets are visible on the author’s profile page and delivered to other users as well. Users can send and receive tweets via Twitter website, SMS or by using an external website.

According to Alexa ranking this web site is standing at the 27th in terms of web traffic. Some sources claims that Twitter is the third most widely used social networking website and around 6 million new visitors are found each month. Nielson.com blog ranked Twitter the fastest growing site and it left zombie and Facebook far behind.

Twitter gathers personally identifiable information about its users and also hare it with the third party and consider the information an asset. Twitter believes to reserve the rights to sell it if the company changes hands.

This year on January 5th high profile twitter accounts were compromised after a Twitter administrator's password was guessed by a dictionary attack and false tweets were sent from those account that were related to sexually explicit and drug related messages.

Twitter had another release this year in June where they launched the beta of its verified Accounts service on June 11. This service will allow the famous and notable people to clarify which twitter account really belong to them and twitter puts a special badge to that profile.

Fans of twitter say it is the best platform to get in touch with busy friends.2009 proved to be a good year for twitter and it received the Webby Award in the “Breakout of the year” category which adds in their achievements. Twitter is famous for facing a lot of downtime which irritates the users.

This May 2009 twitter was used first time in space when astronaut Michael J. Massimino used it to keep updates of their Hubble space Telescope repair mission. In the end of May a TV series was announced by Reveille Productions and Brillstein-Grey Entertainment saying that they will use twitter to track down celebrities.
