Reason 30 - Your Real Estate Agent Helps You with House Painting Arrangements
Whether you are doing home renovation, or buying a new house, it is important to examine the kind of paint your contractor will be using, as some quality of paints (like lead-based ones) posed health hazards.
Together with your real estate agent, you should examine carefully the contents of the paint used in your house. Those that contain strong lead components are dangerous, and most importantly it may affect the health of young children. Being educated on this matter is very important. This requires thorough discussion with your agent and your contractor.
However, while paints usually contain lead, proper precautions should be employed in order to avoid negative effects on the home-dwellers’ health. Here are some tips you must consider toward dealing appropriately with lead-based paints used in your homes:
* Do not use a belt sander dry scraper, dry sand papers, propane torch, and high temperature heat gun to remove the lead based paints. This will create a large amount of lead dust and fumes. The dust of the lead and particles will remain after the work is done, usually for a longer period of time.
* Consider relocation of family members, especially children, and pregnant women while painting activity is ongoing in your house. If not, seal property the affected areas in order to contain the fumes.
* Call the lead help centre and follow other safety measures by calling 1-800-424-LEAD. Ask for the brochures and other informative materials. There are available materials such as “Reducing Lead Hazards When Remodeling Home.” This will explain what to do before, during and after, completing the work.
* Some plumbing works are done with lead or lead solder too. In such case, you may call the local health care department or local water supplier to find out and test the quality of the water. If you suspect a mixture of lead in our tap water, avoid using it for cooking or drinking. You may use cold water for these purposes. On the other hand, only partners can recognize the presence of lead in the water supply. Even, if the water is boiled the lead remains in the water. Allow the tap water to run at least 15 seconds to 30 seconds before using it, if lead is present in your water supply.
Most realtors, though, will give lead content information to their buyers, as well as the existing laws and regulators implemented in the particular locality. There are agencies, like Lead Abatement firms, which can be of much help to you on this matter.
Some government-led agencies even provide funding assistance for reducing the hazards of lead to human health.
